Climb to the depths of a lush garden inside a sinkhole in Mount Gambier, snorkel with playful wild sea lions in isolated Baird Bay or enjoy fresh oysters and native wildlife spotting in arid, unspoilt Coffin Bay. 6. Tasmania

Reachable by air or a long ferry ride from Melbourne, Tasmania is an unspoilt island not to be missed. The state’s beauty lies in its undeveloped status compared to much of mainland Australia.

Wind down tree-lined mountain roads or hike to snowy peaks passing silvery, mirror-like lakes along the way. And if the weather allows, Tasmania even has a choice of beautiful beaches to rival any other state. Take a look at my guides and itinerary below to start planning a trip of your own.

While it’s not a typical holiday destination, Canberra is an interesting place to spend a weekend, with plenty of cultural attractions such as museums and art galleries, as well as Parliament House and a few nearby bush hikes.
